  • The platform offers long-term junior debt for wind farms, thereby bridging financing gaps for project developers, local authorities and medium-sized operators
  • The transaction combines ENERCON’s industry expertise with a specialised institutional fund involving Universal Investment, Mount Street, BKN Capital and MEAG
The transaction, structured by MEAG and ENERCON, enables Munich Re and other institutional investors to invest in wind energy projects via the newly launched ENERCON Finance Solutions sub-fund. The fund, established in Luxembourg, provides subordinated debt for wind energy projects in German-speaking countries and offers investors attractive access to a diversified portfolio in the renewable energy sector.
As a leading wind energy company in Europe, ENERCON is particularly well positioned in the German-speaking market. In addition to large wind farms, the company collaborates with a large number of small and medium-sized project developers, local authorities and private investors. These stakeholders typically rely on traditional bank financing but often have only limited equity capital available for implementing additional projects. It is precisely this funding gap that the platform now addresses by providing junior financing.
The ENERCON Fund enables project developers to achieve a more efficient capital structure without relinquishing ownership stakes or control over their projects. This allows additional wind energy projects to be realised and existing plants to be refinanced, which should support the energy transition. At the same time, this innovative structure offers MEAG investors the opportunity to invest in high-quality wind assets in the German-speaking market.
The platform combines ENERCON’s industrial expertise with a professional specialised fund. ENERCON identifies suitable financing opportunities within its client base and participates in the fund itself as an investor. Independent investment due diligence and ongoing portfolio management are carried out by Mount Street on the basis of detailed investment criteria developed jointly with MEAG. Universal Investment Luxembourg, as a regulated alternative investment fund manager, assumes regulatory responsibility for the fund. Mount Street and BKN Capital supported the structuring and implementation of the platform, with Linklaters acting as legal advisor to the transaction. This collaboration creates a scalable governance structure and enables an efficient investment process whilst maintaining high institutional standards.
"The ENERCON Finance Solutions Fund offers our investors access to an attractive and, until now, largely underserved market segment. The platform enables investment in high-value wind energy projects, which have previously been only limitedly accessible to institutional investors in this form."
Isil Tanriverdi Vermissen, Head of Infrastructure Debt Transactions, MEAG
"This transaction underlines the value of strategic partnerships between industry and institutional investors. Together with ENERCON, we have succeeded in establishing an innovative financing platform that closes financing gaps in the market and provides new impetus for financing the energy transition."
Michael Kittle, Head of Illiquid Assets Debt, MEAG
"Together with ENERCON, we have developed a tailored debt financing solution for the German-speaking wind energy market. The combination of longstanding industry expertise and institutional financing know-how enables the efficient financing of new and existing wind energy projects and supports the continued expansion of renewable energy. At the same time, we are able to provide our investors with exclusive access to long-term, high-quality infrastructure investments that contribute to the energy transition."
Antonia Jobke, Board Member, MEAG
"With the ENERCON Finance Solutions Fund, we are specifically expanding our range of solutions to include an additional financing component for our clients. Together with a strong institutional partner like MEAG, we are creating new opportunities for the realisation of wind energy projects and supporting the further expansion of renewable energies."
Dr Michael Jaxy, CFO of ENERCON
