MEAG has reached an agreement with SMA Altenso GmbH to acquire 100% of the shares in the Höxter battery park. The Höxter battery park is a 130 MW/354 MWh battery storage project (BESS) in North Rhine-Westphalia that is ready for construction.
SMA Altenso will remain closely involved in the project as general contractor and operations service provider for the Höxter battery park, which is expected to go online in the first quarter of 2027.
The Höxter battery park is now the second battery storage project in Munich Re's portfolio after the Metelen battery park, increasing the total capacity to 222.5 MW / 585 MWh. The two battery storage projects form the basis for a BESS platform focused on the acquisition and construction of battery storage projects in Europe.
Foundation for battery storage platform in Europe
“Battery energy storage systems are essential for bridging supply gaps during periods of low renewable generation and in facilitating the greater integration of renewable energy into the grid. With the projects in Hoexter and Metelen, we are laying the foundation for our battery storage platform in Europe”, said Dominik Damaschke, Head of Illiquid Assets Equity at MEAG. “
“This further BESS project represents a key step in developing urgently needed energy storage infrastructure and highlights the importance of strong partnerships”, said Alessandro Materozzi, Head of Project Development at Altenso. “We are proud to be working with MEAG once again to help shape a resilient and sustainable energy future for Germany.”
MEAG is the asset manager of Munich Re. With branches in Europe, Asia and North America, MEAG also offers its extensive know-how to institutional investors and private clients from outside the company group. MEAG currently manages assets to the value of around €355bn, €63bn of which for non-Group investors.
